She Wins México is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to use sports and education as tools for the social, personal, and professional development of girls and women in Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Our organization was founded in 2015 with the vision of achieving gender equality and strengthening the capacities of women.
She Wins México began in December 2015, when Cecilia Vales, our founder, participated in the U.S. Department of State’s program, the Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP). Understanding the world of possibilities that sports can open as opportunities for girls and women led to the creation of our organization, focusing on how girls can access the skills provided by sports.
Our story begins when Cecilia Vales meets Monica González, former captain of the Mexican National Soccer Team, and learns about her organization, Gonzo Soccer, and how she is using soccer to empower girls in the United States and Colombia. Cecilia cannot believe that such academies do not exist in Mexico, despite Monica having been the captain of the national team. Without hesitation, she picks up the phone and calls Regina Vivanco, one of her great friends from the representative soccer team of the Universidad Iberoamericana. This is how they begin working together in Mexico, adding Regina Vivanco and her family’s academy, FutSat. They manage to incorporate 13 soccer academies for girls in Colombia (Barranquilla, Bogotá, Medellín, Quibdó, and San Andrés), and in Mexico, including the State of Mexico, Querétaro, and Baja California.
Later, Cecilia is invited to be part of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Sport Mentoring Program (GSMP).
She Wins México is born from the need that girls and women in Mexico and Latin America face due to the lack of safe spaces where they can practice sports. Spaces that they can identify as their own, where they can develop their motor and sports skills, as well as work on their personal and professional development both on and off the field.
Thus, She Wins México seeks to provide life tools to girls and women, using sports and education as the main vehicles.
We have sports academies and clinics for girls using various sports such as soccer, softball, basketball, and ultimate frisbee, among others. We offer life skills workshops for our participants, teaching them tools that allow them to apply the lessons learned on the field off the field; in their homes, schools, and communities. We implement training for female coaches and physical education teachers to acquire new knowledge in sports, its proper teaching, and application. We work with parents on topics such as the importance of investing in their daughters, nutrition, psychology, and other subjects related to the benefits of sports.
When They Win, We All Win.
